Everyone Can Be An Author!!
Authors write for many different reasons. Three of those reasons are:
To Entertain
To Persuade
To Inform (look for in the spring)
*See examples for each type below:
To Entertain
-When you are entertaining someone, you want to catch their attention and keep it throughout all of your story. You want to describe the setting while taking them on a ride on story mountian!
Just like the mouse tells the children in the book "Library Mouse," everyone can be an author! Do not let yourself become overwhelmed by stories and books that you have read, but create your own story, one that makes you proud! What you write does not have to be perfect, but the more you practice, the easier and more fun it becomes!!! Check out this list of writing tips and then go and try some writing on your own! Do your best and don't get discouraged! Feel free to go to the "contact" section to share your stories with me! Also, check out the story that I have started at the bottom of this page about my favorite time of year, fall!
Writing Tip 1
Pick a topic that you are interested in writing about!
Maybe start out by telling stories of your life and some different experiences you have. Sometimes it helps to think about different people, places, or even things that remind you of stories that you have.

Writing Tip 2
Focus on writing the story first, then make corrections!
Getting to focused on your mistakes will make you frustrated and tired before you can write down your story!

Writing Tip 3
Use exciting words that catch the readers' attention!
As you write your story, try and use words that are descriptive and more exciting than the normal words. For example, instead of saying "I fell to the ground," you could say "I came crashing to the ground with a thud." This will make your writing a lot more exciting to read!

Writing Tip 4
Read over your work to check and make sure you didn't leave off any important details!
Especially when you are writing stories about your life, make sure you go back over every minute of the story that you are retelling so that you don't miss any important details that your reader would be interested in hearing.

Writing Tip 5
Make sure you are writing a seed story and not a watermelon story!
A watermelon story is a story that has a lot of little stories within it. The little stories are called the seeds. Start by writing the seed stories so you do not get overwhelmed by all the parts of the story that you need to include. Instead, focus on the little stories and add a lot of detail to make them exciting!

The Pumpkin Time of Year by Miss Coon
A Fictional Story
The pumpkin festival had come to town and Miss Coon's third grade class buzzed with excitement as they entered the room. For several weeks now, the town of Morton had begun to smell like pumpkins as the trucks shipped in more pumpkins to the factory. Due to the many pumpkins in town, the air was filled with them and even turned the color of the morning dew orange. As the students filed in the classroom, the tips of their shoes were tinted orange and happiness filled their faces as they were eager to share about their first night at the pumpkin festival. Miss Coon gathered the students together for their morning work time to discuss the activities of the eventful night before. Becky was the first to tell about her night and she chose to share about her three favorite rides: the Ferris wheel, the zipper, and the rock-o-plane. She enjoyed those rides so much because she could see for miles across town when she was stopped at the top. There was nothing more exciting for her than to be at the highest point of a ride feeling the wind sliding past her as she tried to pick out her house over the tops of the buildings. Each student had their own story to tell, and too soon it was time to move on to math. Miss Coon encouraged the students who did not have a chance to share their stories during morning work to remember them for writer's workshop later that day. During that time, they could write them down adding as much detail as they desired. Everyone was so excited to make it to writer's workshop time that it was hard to concentrate on their work the rest of the day. Finally after much anticipation, Miss Coon instructed the students to take out their writer's notebooks and begin writing their stories down. Before they started, Miss Coon reminded them to make sure they were writing seed stories and not watermelon stories. She told them that writing about their entire night at the pumpkin festival would be a watermelon story. However, she encouraged them to tell about one part of their night such as their favorite rides, seeing their friends, walking around the merchants tent, or even eating pumpkin ice-cream while watching the pumpkin idol. Each student started by writing the date and then dove into telling their stories. You should do the same!

To Persuade
-when you are persuading someone, you are giving your opinion and backing it up with facts, details, and strong words to influence them
Cooper's Book Review (2015): Poppy by AviWhat it is mostly about is MR.OCAXS and Poppy fighting for new house so Poppy’s family can have food and POPPY wins so they move. And it is a really good story at the end!
My favorite part is where POPPY was on a wood and MR.OCAXS landed hard on the wood and POPPY land right where she had to be so she can be safe. The sad part was where MR.OCAX’S died because POPPY the quill in to foot. |
