Math Domino Thinking at "Play Stations"

What kid doesn't love play stations? Many students have played video games and are highly motivated to play. So, we came up with our own play stations. When you are first learning a video game or a computer game, most kids don't read the directions, they just start playing. They are learning with a purpose. They have to push the buttons to find out what happens when they do that. There is a purpose of the game which usually has something to do with keeping your character alive or winning a race, etc.
In Math Play Stations, my students are working with math manipulatives with a meaning and purpose. They are allowed to take the math manipulative they choose and show what they know with math using it. They can decide what they would like to do with them as long as they can connect it to math. I just ran the first round of Math Play Stations to introduce some new math materials to my students. Jackson, Caleb, and Dylan came up with a math probability problem with dominoes. They wanted to find out how long it would take for their dominoes to fall all the way around the table if they set them up. After several tries and much of the class joining in to help, they were able to accomplish their goal. We discussed estimating, we problem solved to fix the gaps and encourage everyone to not bump the table. After numerous tries, we finally got it to work! Here is a video of that happening!

    Meet Miss Coon

I love to learn new things! One great place to learn is by spending time in nature and the outdoors! Any opportunity that I can get to take a bike ride, hike, or walk I will gladly do it! I also love music and enjoy playing my flute at church and singing with my sisters. But most of all, I love kids.  My passion is to teach children to inquire, and to love learning about this incredible world as I do. My students tend to think I love to learn just because I am a teacher. By modeling the struggle of learning and researching my own interests, I hope my students and others can follow my example and be empowered to seek after their questions to find answers in the midst of the struggle.
